It’s a big download, and there’s no way round that. Most of it is the PDF engine and the toolkit the window is built from, and the engine is rather the point of the program.
What you need
- Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
- No administrator rights. It goes into your own user folder.
- About 350 MB of disk space once it’s installed.
- No account and no internet connection to use it.
What the installer does
- Puts the program in your local applications folder and adds a Start menu entry.
- Offers to open
.pdffiles by default. It won’t take that over unless you tick the box. - Updates an existing copy in place, keeping your settings and your recent files.
- Uninstalls from Settings → Apps like anything else, without leaving bits behind.
Worth reading first
Windows is going to warn you about this file.
When you run the installer you’ll probably get a big blue screen saying “Windows protected your PC”, with the button you actually want tucked away behind a More info link. Your antivirus might grumble about it as well.
That isn’t a sign there’s anything wrong with the file. It happens because the installer isn’t code-signed. A certificate costs a few hundred pounds a year, plus a hardware key to keep it on, and even once you’ve bought one the warning only fades as more people install it over time. It’s the first thing any donations would go towards.
I’d much rather warn you about this than let you meet it cold. I’d also rather you didn’t get into the habit of clicking through these, so here’s how to check that what you’ve downloaded is what I put up.
If you want to carry on
Click More info on the blue screen.
Check the publisher line matches the name at the bottom of this site.
Click Run anyway.
Some work machines block unsigned installers outright and no amount of clicking will get past it. That’s your IT policy doing its job, and there’s nothing I can do from here.
Check the file is mine
Paste this into PowerShell, in the folder you downloaded to. It should print the same string as the one below.

Build it yourself.
Emifyn is under the AGPL, which means all the source is published: the program, the packaging, the installer script, the lot. You can read any of it, and you can build the same program from it without downloading a thing from me.
If you’d rather not run an unsigned installer at all, that’s the honest way round it.
Updates
Emifyn can check whether there’s a newer version and tell you what changed. It won’t install anything on its own, and it won’t tell you you’re up to date when what it really means is that it couldn’t reach the server.
That check is the only time it talks to the internet. Your documents never leave your computer.
That cost you nothing.
